Your journey in this course is unique, and you have the power to direct your own learning. This handout is designed to help you take ownership of your academic journey by setting clear, meaningful goals.



The Power of Goal Setting

Why do we set goals? Goals give us a destination. They provide a clear focus and a path to follow. When we set a goal, we are not just wishing for something to happen; we are actively making a plan to make it happen. This process builds self-efficacy, which is your belief in your ability to succeed.

Understanding SMART Goals

Not all goals are created equal. The most effective goals are SMART. This is an acronym to help you remember the five key components of a strong goal.


  • S - Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve? A specific goal answers the questions: What, Who, Where, and Why. Instead of "I want to do better," a specific goal would be "I want to improve my essay writing."

  • M - Measurable: How will you know when you have reached your goal? A measurable goal has a way to track your progress. For example, "I will raise my first essay grade from a C to a B."

  • A - Achievable: Is this goal realistic and attainable? An achievable goal pushes you but is not impossible. It should be a challenge that you can meet with effort.

  • R - Relevant: Does this goal matter to you and your success in this course? A relevant goal aligns with your personal and academic aspirations.

  • T - Time-bound: When will you achieve this goal? A time-bound goal has a clear deadline. This creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay on track. For example, "I will achieve this by the end of Unit 1."
