In Period 6 (1865-1898), the United States shifts its attention from the Civil War towards an age of industrialization. Technological innovations and the expansion of new markets allow the United States to become one of the most powerful industrial nations.

Migration expands west due to the accessibility of railroads and the desires to begin new economic adventures. Although the United States’ economy appears to strive (with the exception of a few panics), its working class appears to experience great hardship. This era (coined as the “Gilded Age”) identifies the struggles between the capitalist elite and the lower classes. Additionally, disagreements on the roles, purpose, and morals of government face debate among politicians, businessmen, and the general population.

“Our histories never unfold in isolation. We cannot truly tell what we consider to be our own histories without knowing the other stories. And often we discover that those other stories are actually our own stories.”
