The United States drew inspiration from Greek and Roman governmental structures. Democratic and republican ideals made up the foundation of the nascent country. However, Greek and Roman influence did not stop here. Artistic expression followed in the footsteps of Greek and Roman artists and history.
In 1970, art historian George Heard Hamilton wrote, “the use of Greek and Roman forms for symbolic as well as functional purposes, which was a continuous and often dominant tendency in Western art for a century after 1750, has been called the Classic Revival, or Neoclassicism.” Analyze the examples of Greek and Roman inspired art.
