Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798

These laws made more requirements for citizenship, caused deportations, and censored free speech.

 

Adams Onis Treaty of 1819

This treaty between the USA and Spain outlined the border between the USA and New Spain. The USA also acquired Florida.

 

Monroe Doctrine of 1823

President Monroe announced that Europeans are no longer allowed to intervene in the Western Hemisphere.

 

Louisiana Purchase of 1803

President Jefferson purchased land from France and acquired hundreds of thousands of square miles.

 

Seminole Wars (1816-1819)

General Andrew Jackson invaded parts of Florida (owned by Spain).

 

Barbary Wars (1801-1805)

Barbary pirates seized American ships and sailors. The pirates demanded ransom and President Jefferson refused to pay.

 

Washington’s Proclamation of Neutrality of 1793

President Washington announced that the USA would remain neutral during conflicts between France and Great Britain.
