Learning Objective: Explain how and why U.S. participation in World War II transformed

American society.

Learning Target: I can explain how the federal government infringed upon individual rights

during World War II.

WWII Historical Context

Do Now: In which part of the United States were most of the internment camps located? Why do you think that is? (3 - 4 sentences)

This Digital Humanities project allows students to examine three individual stories of Japanese Americans impacted by the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Interviews with the individuals are provided on this site.

Working in teams, reflect on the following questions and write answers in your slides:

  1. How was this individual impacted by the bombing of Pearl Harbor?

  2. Describe this individual’s views on the federal government before AND after Pearl

    Harbor.

  3. What civil liberties were infringed upon in this individual’s narrative?

  4. What opportunities (or deprivation of opportunities) appeared due to the outbreak

    of World War II?

  5. EXIT TICKET: In what ways did Japanese American internment reflect a continuity or change in American society?

“Our histories never unfold in isolation. We cannot truly tell what we consider to be our own histories without knowing the other stories. And often we discover that those other stories are actually our own stories.”
