Task: Create a 12-slide Google Slideshow with screenshots for 3 colleges: 1 reach school, 1 comfy school, 1 safety school. You must base your categories on your PSAT score first, then your GPA.

Learning Target: I can use admissions data, financial aid calculators, scholarships, AP credit policies, and Common Data Set information to decide whether a college is academically and financially realistic.

Do Now: Write Before You Speak

Observe / Infer Chart

Directions: Look at the college cost spreadsheet. Write silently first. Do not talk yet.

What do you OBSERVE in the spreadsheet?

What can you INFER from that observation?

I observe that ______________________________________.

This may mean ______________________________________.

I observe that ______________________________________.

This may mean ______________________________________.

I observe that ______________________________________.

DOK 2

Which college appears to cost the most? What number proves it?

Answer: ____________________________________________________________

DOK 3

Why is it not enough to look only at the first-year cost?

Answer: ____________________________________________________________

DOK 4

If a student loves the most expensive college, what financial questions should they ask before deciding if it is realistic?

Answer: ____________________________________________________________

DOK 4

If you had to advise another student about choosing a college, what rule would you give them?

My rule: ____________________________________________________________

Why this rule matters: ______________________________________________

Partner Rehearsal

Before we discuss as a class:

Partner A: Share one observation.

Partner B: Share one inference.

Then switch.

Write this before our discussion. My partner helped me notice that: ____________________________________________.

Project Directions

You will follow Dr. U’s example slideshow and create your own 12-slide presentation.

Partner Check

Trade screens with a partner.

Partner A checks:

  • Does the slideshow have 12 slides?

  • Are the schools labeled reach, comfy, and safety?

  • Is there screenshot evidence?

Feedback: ____________________________________________________________

Partner B checks:

  • Did the student use PSAT first, then GPA?

  • Did the student include cost information?

  • Did the student explain what the data means?

Feedback: ____________________________________________________________

One improvement I will make is ____________________________________________.

Exit Ticket

Question

My Answer

Which of your three colleges looks most realistic academically?

What PSAT/GPA evidence proves this?

Which college looks most affordable?

What cost evidence proves this?

Which college still needs more research?

Final reflection:

Today I learned that choosing a college requires more than liking the school name because

____________________________________________________________.
